Today many Southeast Missourians will pause to reflect on the life of Martin Luther King Jr., an African-American remembered by some for his fight and struggle for equality among the discriminated.
While Byron Glenn never fought that battle, the Cape Girardeau physician overcame a different battle as a boy in the poor section of San Francisco, Calif.
Glenn eventually moved from the area that he had lived in since he was 1 year old to Carbondale, Ill., during his junior year of high school.

The new guidelines state pot smoking patients and their marijuana suppliers should not be targeted for federal prosecution as long as they follow state laws.
So far 14 other states allow the use of medical marijuana.

Contract discussions with a possible new district manager will be one of the items facing the Pueblo West Metropolitan District board tonight.
Howe-Kerr was the board's choice of district manager to replace Don Saling, who was fired in March.
Negotiations with an earlier candidate, Byron Glenn of Monument, didn't work.

Former Pueblo City Manager Dave Galli is a new commercial loan officer at Vectra Bank, which is the reason he took himself out of consideration for becoming Pueblo West Metropolitan District manager this week.
"I've come full circle," the 50-year-old Galli said Friday, noting that he'd worked in Pueblo banks before joining the city administration 22 years ago.
"I'm enjoying getting back into banking."
